Fish Oil Pills Reduce Size of Breast Cancer Tumors

An exciting new study shows that the omega-3 fatty acid docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) from fish oil pills can reduce the size of breast cancer tumors. Not only can DHA reduce breast cancer tumor size; it also complements the effect of chemotherapy medication Cisplatin while reducing its side effects.

This study was performed by researchers from the Mansoura University in Egypt and published in the scientific journal Cell Division. These surprising conclusions were discovered when the researchers injected mice with breast cancer cells and gave them the following treatments: 125-250mg of DHA, Cisplatin, a combination of Cisplatin and DHA, and a placebo. After recording the tumor size, white blood cells, MDA, and C-reactive protein throughout the study, they confirmed that DHA together with Cisplatin reduced tumor size by 81% and restored blood white cell levels. Cisplatin alone could only reduce tumor growth by 55%. Mice who received 120mg DHA had a 38% less tumor growth, while those who received 250mg DHA had a 79% reduced growth. 250mg DHA was also almost as effective as the Cisplatin-DHA combination in terms of restoring white blood cell count.

According to the researchers, DHA has a positive effect on tumor size because it has its own chemo-preventative and anti-inflammatory effects. These properties also allow this long-chain omega-3 fatty acid to reduce kidney damage, the most serious side effect of Cisplatin. In the second experiment, the researchers treated mice with Cisplatin and divided them into two groups. Half of them were given DHA with the Cisplatin while the other half received none. The mice who received no DHA died due to kidney failure, but only 12% from the omega-3 group developed kidney toxicity.

These promising new findings suggest exciting new possibilities for safer breast cancer treatment. But don't wait for breast cancer to strike; as early as now, adapt lifestyle habits that will prevent this debilitating condition from taking place. Maintain a healthy body weight, eat lots of fruits and vegetables, exercise regularly, and reduce your exposure to xenoestrogens. Xenoestrogens are false estrogens found in plastic food containers, plastic food packaging, cosmetics, meat, and pesticides. When they enter the body, they act like real estrogens and increase the risk of breast cancer. Xenoestrogens can be avoided by eating organic produce as much as possible, especially dairy products and meat. Avoid heating food in plastic containers as the heat will enable these chemicals to seep into the food.

Finally, take vitamins, supplements, or a dose of omega-3 fatty acids daily. A high-quality fish oil supplement will not only give you the omega-3 fats you need to keep breast cancer away; it will also lower the risk of heart disease, cardiovascular disease, and boost your mental health.
