As early as the 1930's it was known - thanks to the Noble prize winning discoveries made by the German scientist Dr. Otto Warburg and the Hungarian scientist Dr. Albert Szent Gyrogyi - that cancer cells thrive in an anaerobic (Oxygen deprived) environment and cannot thrive in an Oxygen rich environment.
This phenomenon is explained by the mechanism involved in cell respiration: normal cells produce their energy using Oxygen, which must filter through cell walls. When the cell walls are blocked, Oxygen cannot filter through and they might regress to an atavist form of energy production using glucose fermentation.
